Managing director John Carney conceived the premise for Begin Over again several years earlier he began to write the screenplay in 2010.[2] The story was partly inspired past his ain experiences equally a musician in a band,[ii] and from his impression of the artists and repertoire (A&R) executives of record labels during the 1990s, which formed the basis of Dan's character.[iv] Carney wrote the script, which was initially titled Tin can a Vocal Relieve Your Life?, before he, Glen Hansard, and Gregg Alexander began writing the songs; he wanted "to work the music around the story, instead of the other manner around."[4] The script'due south mode of featuring songs as a natural element of the story was inspired by the 1954 Judy Garland musical film A Star Is Built-in, and is also employed in Carney's before picture show In one case (2007).[5] Carney offset pitched the pic in 2010 to filmmaker Judd Apatow, who produced the film alongside Tobin Armbrust and Anthony Bregman whose product company Exclusive Media financed the motion-picture show's U.s.$8 million budget.[2]

Before casting Keira Knightley as Gretta, Carney considered casting a pop singer such every bit Adele in the master role, likewise as a number of other actresses including Scarlett Johansson, who was at one signal attached to the projection.[2] [6] Knightley, who had never sung professionally before, prepared for the role by training with a song coach and learning how to play a guitar.[7] Mark Ruffalo was Carney'due south first pick for the role of Dan,[ii] and agreed to star in the movie afterwards Carney sent him the start draft of the screenplay.[vi] Singer Adam Levine was also the only person Carney considered casting as Dave, and won the role after talking with Carney over Skype and recording some dialogue as an audition;[viii] he declined to be paid for appearing in the film.[ix] Although he had had minor acting parts on television before, Begin Over again marked his start role in a film.[8] Carney approached James Corden to appear in the film after admiring Corden'due south performance in the atomic number 82 function in a Broadway production of One Homo, Two Guvnors.[10]

Principal photography of the pic began in New York City on July 2, 2012,[11] and lasted for 23 days.[12] Carney chose to movie in Manhattan'due south lesser known neighborhoods that would be more than recognizable to locals than tourists. Specific locations included Greenwich Village, the Eastward Village, Times Square, and Washington Foursquare Park.[13] [14] Rather than performing alive during filming, the actors sang to pre-recorded tracks. In social club to relieve money on hiring a full coiffure and extras, some scenes—including i in Times Square—were shot late at dark with a handheld camera.[2] The rooftop location near the Empire State Edifice is located at 28 W 36th St.[15] [sixteen] [17] [18]

Carney's criticism of Knightley [edit]

During a series of interviews to promote his flick Sing Street in 2016, Carney repeatedly criticized Knightley'south functioning and comportment while making Begin Again. When asked about the critical reaction to Sing Street by The Independent, Carney responded unprompted that "it's a small personal movie with no Keira Knightleys in information technology. Information technology'due south really rewarding."[19] In the same interview, Carney likewise referred to her repeatedly as a model, despite the fact that Knightley had been working professionally as an actress since childhood, saying "I'll never make a pic with supermodels again." He likewise criticized her in an interview with Heyuguys.com, saying, "I just recollect with Keira information technology was like asking her to practice something that she could not do."[20] Though he did not specifically name Knightley, he did, in an interview with Den of Geek, say that his desire to make Sing Street came from his "feel of working, allow's face it, with a model on my final picture show".[21] Filmmakers Massy Tadjedin, Mark Romanek, Lorene Scafaria and Lynn Shelton, who had worked with Knightley on other films, tweeted their support for her after Carney's comments.[22]

Carney afterwards tweeted a public apology proverb he felt similar "a complete idiot" and saying that Knightley was "nothing but professional person and dedicated" during the filming of the flick.[23]

In 2019, when asked about Carney's comments, Knightley accepted his apology and revealed that she was not shocked past his earlier comments as they had not gotten along during filming.[24] [25]
